Este santuario es un área natural y cultural inscrita en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. Sus más de 37,000 hectáreas de extensión la convierten en una de las áreas con mayor riqueza biológica del Perú. La Unidad de Gestión del Santuario Histórico de Machu Picchu (UGM) fue establecida en 1999 para dirigir las estrategias contenidas en los Planes Maestros, que son los documentos de gobierno regularmente actualizados para la gestión de la propiedad. La UGM se reactivó en 2011.
