María José Gonzalez

Executive Director of the Mesoamerican Reef Fund since 2005

Ms. Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Mesoamerican Reef Fund since 2005, is a wildlife biologist. She was advisor to the National Council for Protected Areas of Guatemala, developing wildlife regulations and the first Red Lists for vertebrates. She headed a Guatemalan research NGO and coordinated a vertebrate ecology project in Tikal National Park with Wildlife Conservation Society. From 1996 to early 2004, she directed FCG, a Guatemalan private environmental fund. She participated in the design and establishment of the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC) and currently serves on its Executive Committee. Additional activities include having chaired the GEF Small Grants Program national committee in Guatemala. She is currently a board member for Coral Reef Alliance.
